Waiting for a URL

You'll get six previews (Google, X, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage), a checklist, and the exact tags to paste.

01

How it works

A server function fetches your page the way a link-preview bot does: one GET, no JavaScript, following up to four redirects. It reads the <head>, pulls every title, description, Open Graph, Twitter and icon tag, and resolves relative paths against the final URL.

Your browser then loads the share image directly to measure it. The previews are close approximations of each platform's layout, built from the same fallbacks the platforms use. When a tag is missing, the preview shows what the platform would actually fall back to.

preview title = og:title ?? twitter:title ?? <title>
preview image = og:image ?? twitter:image ?? (nothing, so a text-only share)

Paste-HTML mode does the same parsing locally with the browser's own HTML parser. Use it for staging sites behind a login or pages you haven't deployed yet.

What each tag does

Ten tags cover almost every place your link will be shared. Everything else is optional.

Why LinkedIn still shows the old image

Platforms cache previews aggressively. LinkedIn holds on to a scrape for roughly seven days, Facebook until you ask it to re-scrape, and Slack and X refresh within a day. Fixing your tags doesn't change a preview that's already cached.

For LinkedIn, paste the URL into LinkedIn Post Inspector. It re-fetches the page and updates the cache immediately. For a quick test elsewhere, add a throwaway query string (?v=2) so the platform treats it as a new URL. Just make sure your canonical and og:url point at the clean version.

Questions founders actually ask

Why isn't LinkedIn showing my new image?
LinkedIn caches link previews for about a week. Fix your tags, then paste the URL into LinkedIn's Post Inspector, which re-scrapes the page and refreshes the cache. X and Slack refresh on their own, usually within a day.
What size should my og:image be?
1200ร—630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio), under about 5 MB, as PNG or JPG. Keep text away from the edges because some platforms crop to a square. Use an absolute https:// URL.
Do meta keywords matter?
No. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for over fifteen years. Spend the time on the title and description instead, since those are what people actually read.
What's the difference between summary and summary_large_image?
summary shows a small square thumbnail next to the text. summary_large_image shows a full-width image card. For most pages, the large card takes far more space in the feed and gets more clicks.
My site is a single-page app. Why are previews blank?
Link-preview bots from LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and iMessage don't run JavaScript. If your meta tags are injected client-side by React Helmet or similar, the bot sees an empty head. Render the tags on the server (Next.js, Remix, Astro) or prerender your marketing pages.
Is the page I check stored anywhere?
No. The URL is fetched once by a server function to read its head, then the response is discarded. Images load directly in your browser. Paste-HTML mode never leaves your browser at all.
