AI Agent vs Hiring a Content Writer: Cost Calculator
First drafts are cheap now. Good content isn’t: it needs a point of view, real examples and editing. An agent can draft, research and repurpose. Publishing unedited AI text at volume tends to hurt more than it helps.

Where the agent cost goes
- Work people still do$4,500
- Reviewing the agent$750
- Model usage$1
- Maintenance$500
Model cost per task: $0.0600 on Claude Sonnet 5.5, for 24 agent tasks a month.
An agent that pays back in 8.6 months.
I build production AI agents with human review, guardrails and logging.
What the agent can and can't take
Good jobs for the agent
- Research a topic and outline it
- Write a first draft in your house style
- Repurpose a post into social threads and newsletters
- Check drafts against a style guide
Keep with a person
- Have original experience or opinions
- Interview customers
- Know which claims are true without sources
What review looks like: Every piece gets a human edit before it is published. That is why review is set to 100% with a long review time.
Good fit, bad fit
| Good fit if… | Not a good fit if… |
|---|---|
| Repurposing existing material into new formats | Thought leadership that depends on lived experience |
| Clear style guide and source material | Regulated claims (health, finance) |
| An editor who can review quickly | No one to edit |
Risks to plan for
- Generic text that readers and search engines ignore
- Made-up facts and quotes
- A voice that drifts away from your brand
How the comparison works
The calculator compares two ways of getting the same tasks done each month: people doing all of them, or an agent doing a share while people do the rest and review the agent's work.
people only = tasks × minutes ÷ 60 × hourly cost
with agent = remaining human work + review time + model cost + maintenance
model cost = agent tasks × (input tokens × input price + output tokens × output price)
savings = people only − with agent
payback = build cost ÷ savings (never, if savings ≤ 0)
It only counts the share of someone's time spent on these tasks, so it answers “what does this work cost”, not “can I remove a job”. Model prices come from the LLM API Cost Calculator.
Worked example
The content writer preset with the example salary of $60,000 plus 25% overhead, 60 pieces of content a month at 180 minutes each, the agent handling 40% and a person reviewing 100% of those:
| Line | Per month |
|---|---|
| People only | $7,500 |
| Remaining human work | $4,500 |
| Reviewing the agent | $750 |
| Model usage (Claude Sonnet 5.5) | $1 |
| Maintenance | $500 |
| With the agent | $5,751 |
| Saving | $1,749 |
With a $15,000 example build cost, payback is 8.6 months. Notice how small the model cost is next to the human time that remains: review time and the share the agent can't finish usually decide the answer, not token prices.
